Adult breakouts and acne has been on the rise particularly in young women in mid to late 20’s. Whether it’s the fast pace of life we all lead with the associated stress and pressure that causes breakouts, hormonal changes, or you are genetically predisposed to acne, the impact can be devastating for some, resulting in increased levels of stress and in some cases depression.
A holistic approach is needed to treat this skin condition to achieve the best results, with a good homecare regime, regular skin peels and possibly supplements such as Accumax.
Here are my pro tips for looking after a breakout prone skin.
Starting with the Dermalogica double cleanse, I always recommend Precleanse to start. The oil-based formula literally melts dirt, bacteria and excess oil from the skin without stripping, a common mistake that’s made with acne-prone skin.
Follow with Active Clay Cleanser, a creamy clay-based cleanser that will help to regulate oil production on the skin. For severe breakouts this can be supplemented with Clearing Skin Wash, Dermalogica’s foaming wash with Salicylic Acid to help clear blocked follicles. So you could use Active Clay Cleanser in the morning and Clearing Skin Wash at night.
Gentle exfoliation with Daily Microfoliant will help keep the skin smooth. Be sure to mix with plenty of water and foam up to avoid excessive friction.
To treat during the day apply Age Bright Clearing Serum. This also contains more of that pore-clearing Salicylic Acid as well as Niacinamide and White Shitake Mushroom for brighter, more even-toned skin.
For daytime moisturising you might want something mattifying such as Oil Free Matte SPF30. This broad-spectrum sunscreen prevents shine and skin ageing on an oily skin, but if you want a moisturiser that’s light and hydrating with a gel like feel, you can’t beat Calm Water Gel.
At night, there are several option to treat breakouts and smooth the skin. Retinol Clearing Oil has slow release retinol that works all night to optimise skin recovery, reduce the appearance of fine lines and hyperpigmentation, with Salicylic Acid to target active breakouts and clear the skin.
For stubborn breakouts, Age Bright Spot Fader uses Salicylic Acid to help reduce breakouts and Niacinamide and Hexlyresorcinol to fade post-breakout marks without overdrying the skin. Follow with Calm Water Gel to saturate the skin with Moisture.
As I mentioned, a series professional treatments combined with a strict homecare regime can make a real difference to breakout-prone skin. My recommendation would be a course of Pro Power Peels to target the breakouts and post inflammatory pigmentation.
